Outline of Paper

The need for affiliation is a part of my ad because the skateboarder has all his friends in the same place cheering him on. All of his friends are sharing the same emotions that he is.

The need to achieve is one of the biggest parts of my ad because it shows a professional skateboarder using this board. That makes the reader feel that it must be a great board and they can become professional also by using it.

The need for attention is also a part of my ad because it shows the skateboarder being admired and respected by everyone else in the ad. Even though there are other things going on, the skateboarder is the biggest event happening.

Points and Thesis of my Paper

The main points of my paper will be the need for affiliation, the need to achieve, the need for prominance, and the need for attention.

The thesis of my paper will be: Based on my advertisement, if a skateboarder buys a Mystery Skateboard, that person will become a very good skateboarder and will be envied by friends and peers.

Magazine Ad

My adverstisement is for Mystery Skateboards. It shows a pro skateboarder doing a trick on a Mystery Skateboard.
It shows the need for affiliation because around the skateboarder, theres many people who look like they are all friends having a good time. Also, it shows the need to achieve because the ad is showing that if you buy a Mystery board, you will become a good skateboarder and become popular. This also shows the need to dominate because only the person doing the trick can actually perform the trick. The need for prominence is also shown because the skateboarder is admired and respected by the crowd watching. My ad shows physiological needs by showing younger people drinking beer and playing beer games.
The magazine ad is directed towards the younger, middle class, white male. The skateboarder and most of the people in the ad fit the description. Out of 31 people, only 4 are females, and only 4 are not white. They all look to be in their early 20's.

Unit 1 Reflection

The first unit was hard because the whole first week we were in class, I had no internet. So from the start I was already behind. When we were first assigned the 3 page paper, I thought that i wasn't gonna be able to do it. 3 pages just sounded like a lot to write about one focal point. I realized when I was writing the paper that it wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. I enjoyed reading Dumpster Diving and I also enjoy blogging. I never blogged before so it was new to me. I thought unit 1 went pretty smooth, but it would have been a lot better if I had internet from the start.

Dumpster Diving

After reading dumpster diving, I found that Lars Eighners subtle thesis is at the end of the story when he is explaining that the middle class people are the ones with the problems. He explains that he and the rich both are happy because Lars, "shares this attitude with the wealthy," because they know that they have plenty more coming to them. The middle class people are always trying to find something but cannot, and thats what seperates Lars from the middle class.

While reading dumpster diving, I realized very soon in the story, Lars uses a lot of description to show the story instead of telling it. When he is telling the "stages" of a new dumpster diver, he uses great description to tell how it felt like to be a new dumpster diver.

Also, he uses very good creative literacy by painting a picture in your mind when he is describing what foods would be good to eat and what could be potentially fatal. It really makes you wonder what the food looks like that hes actually eating....

All about me

Whats up? My name is Dave Wendorf and I am a freshman this year at SIU and am excited to be here. I don’t really have a major yet although I know it will be something towards business because I want to become a stock broker one day. I’m from a suburb west of Chicago, called Elmhurst, where I went to York High School with 840 kids in our graduating class. A few of my buddies from my high school also came down to southern so I already know a few people down here. I’m looking forward to this year because I know it will be fun. Also, I’m looking forward to a good English class.
